“I never imagined I would get so much out of befriending….I was not looking for a reward, but I have got so much out of it…I have met such gracious people. When I see the other person feeling comfortable and relaxed, and looking forward to a visit, I feel a sense of satisfaction and gratitude.”
A BRS Volunteer Befriender

Become a Befriending Volunteer with BRS
Our volunteers are at the heart of Ballyhoura Rural Services Befriending. Volunteering with BRS offers a rewarding way to make a real difference in someone’s life while staying connected to your local community. No prior experience is needed—just a kind heart, a listening ear, and a willingness to build genuine human connections. To become a BRS Befriender, you’ll be asked to:
- Attend a short interview
- Undergo Garda Vetting
- Participate in two induction training sessions (3 hours each)
Once your paperwork and training are complete, you’ll be ready to step into this meaningful role and start supporting someone who may feel isolated or lonely.

Become a Social Farm Volunteer
Becoming a volunteer at Doon Social Farm is a hands-on way to support people in your community while connecting with nature and farm life. You don’t need a background in farming—just patience and a willingness to get involved. You can volunteer in different ways on the social farm. The options are: Gardening, Admin and Café. To join our team of Social Farm Volunteers, you’ll be asked to:
- Attend an informal interview
- Take part in a short volunteer orientation
Once your orientation is complete, you’ll be ready to contribute to meaningful daily activities on the farm and support others on their wellness journey. Volunteers can join us on Volunteer Fridays, between 10am and 1pm. There is a cup of tea/coffee and a scone for all volunteers at 11.30 in the café. Here, volunteers can meet others and have a relaxing social moment.
Volunteers are also invited to our staff barbecue and events as a way of saying Thank You!
